Contrast hydrotherapy

In the shower, apply 1 minute hot (not too hot) to face, 30 seconds cold (or cool), back and forth 3 times, blowing nose, one side at a time (block one side and blow out the other). Follow with Original or Daily Care Arm and Hammer™ Simply Saline™ rinse, following can instructions. Just be sure the ingredients on the can say “isotonic” or 0.9% sterile saline solution. Bicarbonate may be another acceptable ingredient. No fragrances or other additives should be listed. Do this for at least 3 days, until symptoms clear, or ongoing as a safe effective hygiene regimen.

Shea butter / vitamin E for nasal dryness

Take a few drops of pure Vitamin E oil, and mix it with Shea Butter (unscented, unrefined, organic preferred, fair trade preferred) and swab around just inside each nostril before bed at night. Stir up the Shea and mix with a few drops of the vitamin E oil, as it is quite hard and “cakey.” Both are available online or at Super Supplements, PCC, Pharmaca and/or Whole Foods Market.

Do this each night before bed. Better this way than to have an oily feeling in your nose during the day. You’ll start to notice a less dry nose, less nose bleeding, and any hard crusty stuff will soften and get blown out.

Ear wax removal with olive oil or Debrox

Use a blue bulb ear syringe (ask at the pharmacy) to draw up enough Extra Virgin Olive Oil to fill the ear. Room temperature is fine and be sure it has no obvious particulates.

Fill the ear and block outflow with cotton ball. Take care not to get it on clothes as olive oil stains. Sit for 15 minutes per affected ear, or just 15 min if doing both at once.

Draw slightly warm water into blue bulb ear syringe and flush the ear to remove any softened ear wax. Always use slightly warm water in the ear to avoid a vertigo reaction when cool liquid is instilled. Keep flushing until wax comes out, likely as a single glob or else in pieces. Repeat daily as needed until wax is dislodged/ear irritation goes away.

If olive oil doesn’t result in ear wax removal, you can use 6.5% carbamide peroxide according to package directions (Debrox or generic OK, Walgreens brand recommended).

As a final step, instill “swimmers ear drops” which include 95% isopropyl alcohol plus 5% glycerin according to package directions (Debrox or generic OK, Walgreens brand recommended). This will dry the water from your outer ear canal.

Paper cup suctioning for plugged ear

Get a paper cup, crumple a small face cloth or paper towel and pack it into the bottom of the cup. Pour boiled water over the towel just enough to soak. Place the cup on a table and bring your ear down over the cup, making a seal. Squeeze the cup gently to make a suction pressure to unpop the ear.

Take care not to burn your face and know that this can create a sizable amount of pressure, so go easy.
